Barclays Money Skills toolkit

This toolkit contains activities and information to help teachers, volunteers, youth workers and other practitioners who work with young people to put together and run successful sessions on money management. There are activities that will appeal to all kinds of young people and situations – some to get participants to think about and share feelings about money – and others to teach practical skills like how to budget or save money. The toolkit contains six sections that each look at a different area of financial capability.

This DVD resource follows five friends aged 16-20 who are planning a holiday together. The six episodes (2-3 minutes each) address a different aspect of money management and are accompanied by tutor notes to enable delivery of a 45-minute tutorial. Each clip can be delivered as an individual 45-minute activity, or you can choose a 45-minute version of three clips if you’d prefer to cover a broader range of concepts.

Sort your spending is a handy self help guide which provides young people with some of the tools and information they need to begin managing their money. The guide assesses your ‘money personality’ – whether you live for the moment and spend money on impulse, or plan weeks ahead and plan every purchase. Topics and practical exercises include budgeting, identifying ‘money wasters’, keeping a spending diary, developing a budget, top tips for spending less, how to increase your income, and building savings.
